Cuticle Layer of a Plant

This is a picture of red winged sumac that appears in the fields of our farm in the fall. The leaves of the sumac are shiny and waxy, this layer of the leaf is called the cuticle layer.

Modified Leaf of a Plant

These are two leaves from a forest that was harvested and is now thick with new growth. The leaves are so large because they are fighting for sunlight among the rest of the growth which is why they are considered modified plant leaves.

Meristem

This flower bud is an example of a meristem.

Long Day Plant

This is a head of Romaine Lettuce and lettuce is a long day plant.

Littoral Zone Organism

These are butterfly clams that reside in the littoral zone of the ocean.

Spore

This is a puffball fungi that when stepped on or touched releases a smoke-like puff of spore out its top.

Introduced Species

In my father's hand is a branch of an autumn olive plant. The plant is not originally from the United States and is considered an invasive introduced species.

R-strategist

This tree frog is a prime example of a R-strategist.

Mutualism

The butterfly shown is pollinating the flower and pollination is an example of mutualism.

Modified stem of a plant

The flattened stems of the cactus are considered as modified stems.

K-strategist

This tree is an example of a K-strategist.

Homeostasis

Homeostasis is defined as the property of a system that regulates its internal environments and tends to maintain a stable, constant condition of properties such as temperature or pH. All endothermic animals exhibit homeostasis, like this lemur.

Heterotroph

This pittbull is an example of a heterotroph.

Gymnosperm Cone


This giant conifer cone from New Mexico is an example of a cone of a gymnosperm.

Eukaryote

This mushroom is an example of an eukaryote from the fungi kingdom.

Basidiomycete

These bracket fungi are an example of a type of basidiomycete.

Frond

We would normally refer to this as a leaf of a fern but actually it is considered a frond instead.

Segmented Body

This is a caterpillar that I found that has a segmented body.

Exoskeleton

Beneath the dragonfly is it's exoskeleton.

Pollen

Dusting the bottom petals of this flower is yellow pollen.

Anther and Filament

Shown in this picture are the anther and filament of a flower. The anther being the flexible purple area and the filament being the white stem.

Flower Ovary

This picture is shows a flowers ovary that is attached to the style.

Amniotic Egg

This is an example of an amniotic egg.

Radial Symmetry

This flower exhibits radial symmetry.

Pollinator

The bee on this flower is a pollinator.

Parasite

At the top of the alligators mouth there is a black object seen in between his teeth and that is a leech.

Lichen

The green spots on these rocks are lichen.

Endotherm

This bird is an example of an endotherm.

Ectotherm

This Florida tree frog is an example of an ectotherm.

Bilateral Symmetry

These leaves are examples of bilateral symmetry.

Territorial Behavior
